Fair Organizer: Toronto, Canada

Gary MacPhie joined Search Associate in July 2017 and is the organizer of the Toronto Search Fair held in early December.  He brings over 30 years of teaching and administrative experience in international schools to his new role as a Senior Associate. Gary started his teaching career in Toronto in 1981. He continued taking various qualification courses at the University of Toronto, and during an ESL evening class he recalls a classmate chiming in with stories of the time he taught in Colombia and Israel. This piqued his interest, one thing led to another and two years later he embarked on his adventure in the world of international teaching.

Gary took his first international teaching position at the Singapore American School in 1988. From there he moved to the Taipei American School and then started his administrative career at International School Moshi, Tanzania in 1999. This followed with principalships at Qatar Academy in Doha, Elmwood School in Ottawa and ten years as the elementary principal at the American International School of Guangzhou, China.

Gary’s wife Barbara will be supporting him in running the Toronto Search Fair. For the last nine years she was Head of Admissions at the American International School of Guangzhou.  With her background in business and marketing, she will assist with the administrative duties at Search.

Together, they make a strong team well suited to ensure the continued success of the Toronto Search Fair.

One of the greatest accomplishments that they both share is the growth of their two daughters who are Third Culture Kids. They were born in Taiwan and attended school in Tanzania, Doha, Ottawa and graduated from Guangzhou.  Gary’s family has certainly thrived overseas, and he is now looking forward to sharing his passion for international teaching with other adventurous educators.

Gary and Barbara left China in June 2017, and now live in Stouffville, Ontario, just north of Toronto. They are glad to be closer to their families and friends. Gary has joined a local pipe band, and is active as the President of Clan Macfie in Canada. His biggest thrill is being able to watch a Leafs game in real time, and he even hopes to attend a couple of games at the ACC. After living overseas for over 25 years, they are enjoying the reverse culture shock.
